New Zealand Tour - Hobbiton Movie Set and Farm Stay

New Zealand - One of our bucket-list destinations! An extremely beautiful country that both me and wifey look forward to. Most people would self-drive in NZ but we went with a group tour package because my wife can't drive and I had not drove for ages!

ASA Holidays was the only travel operator that included a farm stay which we had wanted to experience so the choice is obvious. The 12 days package, inclusive of one night in Sydney, international flights on Qantas, domestic flights on Jetstar and accommodation in 4 star hotels, cost almost $4K per adult including taxes. For Miley, she was 3 weeks to 2 years old then, so her fare was less then $1K including taxes. It's considered an expensive trip according to our tour guide, as most people would rather go to Europe at this price. However unlike the Europe tour package which tend to cover many places over a short span of time, our NZ trip was in fact quite relaxing and we had ample time for each location.

One of the key highlight of the itinerary was visiting the Hobbiton Movie Set where 'The Lord of the Rings' movie was filmed. My wife was an avid fan of the movie and you could image how excited she was. This was the only site where we each held on to a camera!

The set took 9 months to build but only appeared 8 seconds in the movie!
Miley looks like she lives there. Perfect for her height!
Looks like she's heading out for some action....
Working really hard, earning a living....
An inviting cozy corner in the hobbit cafe.
Hobbit Soo and her 'giant' daddy.
We'd head over for drinks at the Green Dragon Inn...
To smoke pipes....
And sip ginger beer...
Being random (maybe drunk), little Hobbit Soo sings "Three Blind Mice" with a stick in her hand on her way home...

The next highlight of the trip was the Farm Stay where we got to experience genuine Kiwi hospitality and spent a night with a local family at the farmhouse. The tour group was split up for a day and each family was picked up by their respective farm hosts. We stayed with an old couple who owned a huge farm and had 3 rooms to spare hence we bunked in with another couple and our tour guide.

Miley was excited the moment she stepped into the house cos they had a cat! She kept tailing the cat throughout the house...
We were served tea and home baked cookies by the hostess.
They even had baby chair and cutlery cos their grand children will come by every now and then.
After tea, the host brought us out to tour their farm while the hostess prepared for dinner. We rode on a tractor around their farm, which was quite an experience, and stopped in between to see their horses, cows and a black pet pig named Maizey.

First stop at the horse stables....
Then on a tractor around the farm!
Definitely stepped on some cow dung....
Do we smell or does the cow?
Meet Maizey, their pet pig, who eats everything from leftover dinner to banana skin...
And they have a huge beautiful garden with lots of space to run around....
And beautiful violet flowers... love
A lemon tree...
Even a flower that matches her outfit!
Dinner was sumptuous. Choice of beef or lamb, self-grown potatoes and carrots, home-made blueberry pie with ice-cream for dessert and lots of other dishes which I can't quite remember. Didn't take too many photos in the house cos I felt like I was intruding their privacy if I did.

My initial impression of a farm stay was staying in a wooden house with probably dim lighting and maybe not so modern toilets. I was totally wrong cos our room was like a suite with an ensuite bathroom!

Our room could comfortably accommodate a family of four
That's the opposite view with the bathroom door in the background. Can you spot Miley?
Breakfast
Our host and hostess before we say goodbye...
Another picture of Miley "tailing" the cat!
More pictures of other gorgeous sites of New Zealand in my next post.... :)

Day Trip to the River Safari

Since Miley has started to recognize animals and is able to name a few like monkey, fish, giraffe, penguin, bear, lion etc, we decided to bring her to see some of them over the weekend. And since we've already been to the Singapore Zoo on her first birthday, even though it was already 8 months ago, we went to the newly opened River Safari located just next to the Singapore Zoo! The River Safari is a river themed animal attraction where it houses the the Giant Pandas, Kai Kai and Jia Jai, and also giant fishes from all over the world such as the Mekong Giant Catfish, Piranhas and Manatees aka the mermaid. Since the attraction has not fully opened, only about two-third, we paid a discounted admission fee of $25 instead of $35 per adult. Free entry for Children below 3 years old. Even though its not fully open, there were still plenty to see and took us 3 hours to leisurely tour the whole place. And the best part is that everywhere is sheltered, except for the monkey attraction where the little squirrel monkeys were free to roam in an enclosed outdoor habitat. No sweat!

Mother and daughter in matchy matchy outfit specially for this outing. Daddy dun have.
Giant tank at the Mekong River section.
Miley captivated by the rays of light under water.
Greeted by the Red Pandas as we entered the cool biodome.
Hello Pandas! That's Kai Kai the outgoing one...
And that's Jia Jia the shy one that can only be watched from the CCTV...
A picture with Kai Kai...
Another picture together with daddy...
At the exit we were given a preview of the giant polar bear from the main zoo.
Tea time at Mama Panda Kitchen with their signature dish of Panda Bun (red bean paste inside)
Miley enjoying the breeze from the reservoir...
Beautiful view form the deck. Could see a group of birds opposite which I believe were migrating storks...
hide and seek playtime with mummy...
Cute squirrel monkeys that came so close...
Last stop at the Amazon Flooded Forest where Manatees swam gracefully. Spot the baby Manatee.
It was a fantastic day out. I have to say that the Singapore Zoo including the Night Safari and River Safari are one of the the best attractions in Singapore. Nothing beats being so close to nature and surrounded by gorgeous animals.

First Magazine Feature

About two months ago, I received an email asking if I would be interested to do an email interview that will be featured in the June issue of Motherhood Magazine. I took it up! The tough part wasn't actually answering the questions but to find a high resolution photograph of me and Miley! Photos taken with our mobile phones wouldn't be good enough for print and the only time we use a proper camera is usually during travel but then I'm usually the one behind the camera. And all parents would know how difficult it is to get a good shot with children, plus it had to be a recent picture, so that was really tough. Fortunately, there was that ONE SHOT taken at the breakfast table in Maldives!

Very excited when I got my hands on the magazine although it was only a small feature (on page 113). They had shorten my answers for print and here's the original version.

How would you describe your parenting approach/philosophy?
Not trying to be more then just parents. As parents, our duty is to protect and provide for them but not to live their lifes for them. Let them choose what they want to do by exposing them to as many options and guiding them in the positive direction with an open mind. When they grow older, let them experience life and the difficulties they may face will only allow them to learn better about themselves and eventually live the life they want to live.

Before and after fatherhood: how has being a dad changed you?
I'm still the same me except that most of my free time is now spent with my daughter. Before becoming a dad, my wife and I wouldn't mind spending our weekends doing nothing at home.  Now with a kid, we go out more often either to the outdoor for fresh air or just anywhere that we could engage in family activities together.

What is the biggest challenge you face as a dad, and how do you overcome it?
The biggest challenge is to overcome the guilt in me when I occasionally choose to go out with friends for dinner and catchup instead of rushing home to company my daughter after work. I just have to tell myself that it’s ok and everyone deserves a break. I don’t want to grow old with a happy family to only find out that I have lost all my friends.

What is the most rewarding thing about being a dad?
To have someone point her little finger at you and call you “Daddy” with a wide smile every time she sees you.

Please share an oft-overlooked/underrated tip/advice for other dads.
Daddy does matters and plays an important part in a child’s development, especially if you have a daughter. Studies have shown that girls would tend seek daddies for comfort and assurance from toddler up to their teenage years. Those who receive would grow up to become more confident with higher self-esteem. Do not think that comforting girls is a mummy’s job.

Since then I kept reminding myself to pass over the camera and here's another nice picture to end this post, taken during our China trip. Tag #prouddad #jealousmum
